Cu Lao Cham (Cham Islands), a large island chain consisting of several small islands distance 25 nautical miles off the coast from Hoi An, has been recognised by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a national landscape

Sea wolf on beautiful landscape of Nha Trang bayCu Lao Cham has been listed among the national sea reserve with the diversified fauna and rare woods, which need to be put under strict protection. There are 135 species of coral, 500 seaweeds, more than 200 fishes, four varieties of tiger prawn and 84 molluse. The location has also been well known for birds’ nests, which is considered a valuable and tasteful kind of meal. When coming here, travellers will have chances to view the sea swallows' nests clinging to the towering cliff.

Cu Lao Cham has drawn more attention from tourists in the last few years. In 1999, it received only 593 tourists, while the figure rose to 10,000 in 2006, 60% of which were foreign travellers, which represented a 20% increase every year.

However, experts have pointed out that Cu Lao Cham needs to be further invested to become more attractive in the eyes of tourists. Up to now, there has been only one investment project in here, by the Cu Lao Cham Investment Joint Stock Company. There are some 20 boarding houses in the island commune, but all of them do not have enough modern facilities.

Tran Van An, Deputy Director of the Hoi An Heritage Preservation Centre said that the centre is planning to provide a new tour: travelling with sailing boat. He said that he has the documents showing that the sailing boats once went in and out in great number. He said that the model of the sailing boats of the last centuries will be restored, and experienced fishermen will drive some 20 sailing boats running on the river..

Truong Van Bay, Deputy Chairman of the Hoi An Town Peoples’ Committee said that the appearance of the sailing boats will have good impression on cultural researchers, tourists and those who love Hoi An Vietnam.
