Travel to the Fairy Lake in Ha Tay Province Vietnam
Halong Bay Wonder in Vietnam voting campaign launched
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Van Tho said this is an opportunity for Vietnam to advertise itself. He said that through this contest, the world will know more about Vietnam. He called for all Vietnamese people to do their part and vote.
At the ceremony, a 6-litre Hennessy Mathusalem bottle was auctioned off. The $25,000 proceeds were then presented to the Halong Bay Vietnam Management Board.
In 1962, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism arranged Halong Bay Vietnam as a National Renowned Landscape Vestige.

Vinpearl not obstruct ships: Nha Trang Khanh Hoa’s official
Does the Vinpearl system encroach on the Nha Trang Port?
According to the planning to 2020 approved by the Transport Ministry, Nha Trang Port is a tourism port. Its wharfs can receive cargo ships of 20,000 tonnages and passenger ships of 30,000 GRT. Considering Nha Trang Port’s planning and development strategy, responsible authorities have approved the construction of the Vinpearl cable car system, and the investor has followed the approved design. Thus, the Vinpearl system doesn’t encroach on Nha Trang Port Vietnam.
Does the Vinpearl system obstruct ships moving in and out of Nha Trang Port?
The height of the Vinpearl cable car system was based on Nha Trang Port’s planning and approved by Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee and related agencies. Ships suitable to the technical conditions and capacity of the port can move in and out of the port easily and aren’t obstructed by Vinpearl. Ships with sizes surpassing wharfs’ capacity can stay outside the port and use other means to land passengers.
Will Nha Trang Port be expanded to receive large-sized ships?
Some people suggest that in order to receive such big-sized ships as the Aurora, Nha Trang Port should be expanded to the north or the east. The issue of expansion is a macro issue, which requires careful research and consideration since it can’t be separated from the sceneries of Nha Trang Port and several sites with great historical and cultural values like the Institute of Oceanography and the Dao Dai Palace Complex.
Besides Nha Trang Port Vietnam, in the future, Khanh Hoa will have other tourism ports such as Ba Ngoi and Van Phong which will be able to receive large-sized ships.

Vietnam sea travel
Vu The Binh, head of the travel department under Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), told the Daily yesterday that the number of cruise passengers would return to the peak recorded in 2002 and surge in the coming years to one million a year.
Last year, international cruise ships brought in 140,000 tourists, which despite the year-on-year increase of 11% showed a steep fall from 350,000 cruise-ship passengers the country welcomed in 2002. The nosedive was then attributed to the SARS and bird flu epidemics.
But Binh said the recovery would be quick.
“We believed that we can recover the lost number in the next few years, and even boost the number of cruise passengers to one million in the foreseeable future given new promotion and investment activities being made,” he said.
He noted that the country has 4,000 kilometres of coastline, which is the greatest potential for the sea-tourism development.
Cruise ship operators are increasingly choosing Vietnam because it is a safe destination after SARS and bird flu. Furthermore, the country is located near two centres of cruise travel in Asia, namely Hong Kong and Singapore.
However, the key to optimism is greater efforts being made to design new routes and to make Vietnam better known to well-to-do tourists worldwide, according to Binh.
This year the VNAT department and tour operators will survey dozens of new sea tourist routes linking Vietnam with neighbouring countries and territories, including China’s Hainan Island, Singapore, Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Cambodia. These routes will take in famous stopovers in Vietnam, including Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Vinh, and Halong.
Binh said VNAT would combine with Vietnam tours operators to open new sea tourist routes, go outside to meet with cruise lines to promote the potential of Vietnam, and invite them to the country for the promotion purpose.
“VNAT will help tour operators strongly promote the country’s images to partners during promotion trips,” he said.
Binh said VNAT would also support local companies to cooperate with foreign partners to establish joint venture companies to attract cruise passengers.
VNAT will also ask the Government to give visa exemptions to these visitors,” he said.
Vietnam also is working closely with other ASEAN countries to boost cruise travel in the region.
Currently, many famous cruise lines in Europe, the U.S, and Asia such as Costa Crocieres, Star Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, P&O Princess Cruises are regularly calling on the country.

AirAsia to increase flights to Vietnam, launch new service
More flights to Vietnam, airAsia will add seven more flights to its Kuala Lumpur - Hanoi schedule from next month and launch service between Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam and the Malaysian capital.
Bui Duc Hanh, Hanoi station manager of AirAsia, told the Daily on Wednesday that the Malaysian low-cost carrier would begin one more daily Hanoi-Kuala Lumpur flight from June 19 in addition to the existing daily flight on the route.
AirAsia will use the 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft for the additional flights, which are launched in response to an increasingly strong demand for air travel on the Hanoi-Kuala Lumpur run.
To mark the inauguration of the extra flights, AirAsia will implement its airfare promotion from May 8 to 10 with a single trip from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur and Thailand’s capital of Bangkok starting from US$15, exclusive of taxes and surcharges.
The discount airfares will account for 25% of the seats on the daily flights that AirAsia currently operates between Hanoi and Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. The airfares will apply from June 19 this year to March 29 next year.
Hanh said passengers would pay the US$14 airport fee at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi with the tickets they purchase online at www.airasia.com and the airline’s agents.
AirAsia has carried nearly 105,000 passengers on the Hanoi-Bangkok flights since the service began in October 2005 and nearly 32,000 passengers on the Hanoi-Kuala Lumpur flights since October last year, Hanh said.
Airlines reported high growth in the number of Vietnamese traveling by air to Malaysia and other regional countries during Vietnam’s Reunification Day and International Labor Day holidays.
Malaysia Airlines in Vietnam said tourists accounted for 80% of the almost-full flights the carrier operated from Hanoi Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam during the longer public and weekend holidays.
General manager Terence Krish Swampillai told the Daily yesterday that the airline was working on increasing frequency from the 23 weekly flights between the two countries.
Jetstar Airways estimated passengers made up for 95% of the 180 seats on the Airbus A320 plane the low-cost carrier runs on the Ho Chi Minh City-Singapore route during the holidays.
Jetstar started on Wednesday to give passengers one ticket for every one ticket they book until May 8 for departing from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore from July 1 to September 30.
Viet calculated the return tickets of the "1 To Buy - 2 To Fly" program for two persons cost some US$298 nett.
The weekend and public holidays also saw a surge in passengers on domestic flights run by Vietnam Pacific Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and its subsidiary Vietnam Air Services Co. (VASCO).
The airlines said their domestic flights were fully occupied by holidaymakers but did not compare the number of passengers with that of the same period last year. Vietnam Airlines has added more than 40 domestic flights from April 26 to May 3.

Natural feelings on Orchid Stream Island in Vietnam
Orchid Stream Island in Vietnam, visitors looking for an island with five-star services and accommodation won’t find them here, but for those who want a back-to-nature experience, Orchid Stream Island is one of the best choices.
Located on Ninh Phu Commune, Ninh Hoa District, Khanh Hoa Province Vietnam, the island is formed by many small streams flowing down Hon Heo Mountain, winding through rocky hills for six kilometers and across the plain before emptying into Nha Phu Lagoon.
Until recently there were few services available for tourists, but today there are many activities, for example ostrich riding, an animal circus, mountain climbing or sea-sports such as parasailing and jet skiing.
There are 12 large, tall male ostriches ready to lend their backs to visitors. They are very friendly and travellers are welcome to watch and feed them. Some shops on the island also sell ostrich eggs with little paintings on them, priced around VND200,000 per egg.
The most famous animal on the island is an elephant named Lan (Orchid). Seven years ago the 25-year-old female elephant left her homeland in Ban Don Village in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak Vietnam. She is very friendly and allows visitors who want to take photos with her to sit on her trunk or back.
Her keeper usually has some sugar-cane to offer to Lan when she finishes her performance. From this month, Lan will perform two circus shows, at 9.30am and 1pm every day, each lasting about 15 minutes. Her show will usually be followed with a performance by the four bears.
Last month the island launched a mountain climbing service for tourists, arranged by the owner in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City - based Hong Bang Travel Company.
Tours originating in the province’s Nha Trang City cost just VND450,000 per person for a one day climbing tour on the island with expert guides from Hong Bang.
As suggested by the name, the island has many beautiful orchids gathered from across the northern and central regions, as well as plants native to the central coast. In the “Cave of Orchid Flower” visitors can see more than 3,000 beautiful specimens of 39 orchid species.
Two houses on stilts with a capacity of 40 people each are always available for visitors who want to enjoy the natural atmosphere of the island.
Tours to Orchid Stream Island can be purchased from Long Phu Tourist Company, which offers a province-based tour, or from a number of travel firms in Ho Chi Minh City.
In Nha Trang, call (058) 527 022 for more information on tours to the island.
In Ho Chi Minh City, tourists can contact Ben Thanh Tourist Travel Service Center to book a tour to Orchid Island.

Nha Trang Bay development in Khanh Hoa Vietnam
Nha Trang Bay development in Vietnam, Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa Province, Nguyen Chien Thang, talked more about the province’s plan to withdraw Nha Trang Bay from recognition as a national landscape.
Why does Khanh Hoa Province not want Nha Trang Bay recognised as a national landscape?
If Nha Trang Bay is recognised as a national landscape, every activity of repair and construction in protection zone 1 (strictly protected area) of the bay is banned under the Law on Cultural Heritage. Even the government doesn’t have the right to permit such activities. The Khanh Hoa People’s Committee has reported to the provincial Party Committee about this case and the Khanh Hoa Party Committee has agreed to ask the Ministry of Culture and Information to withdraw Nha Trang Bay VIetnam from the list of national landscape sites as this title may affect the development of the bay.Is this decision one way of approving activities that could harm the scenery of Nha Trang bay Vietnam ?
Why harm the landscape? We aim to make it more beautiful, not destroy it. For example, islands in the bay now have wild trees only. We will replace wild trees by varieties of higher value. It is necessary and we will do so. Khanh Hoa Vietnam will design a plan for the bay to attract tourists. Those tasks are necessary but under the Law on Cultural Heritage, they can’t be performed.
Is it a contradiction when the province’s policy is protecting the environment of Nha Trang Bay but plans to withdraw it from recognition as a natural landscape?
I don’t think it’s a contradiction. For example, if Hon Tre Island is left neglected, what is its value and who will visit it? But when the island has Vinapearl Land, it has become a destination of many visitors. Khanh Hoa has a plan for the bay and the Ministry of Culture and Information has agreed with the plan. But under the Law on Cultural Heritage, the ministry’s agreement is meaningless.
So Khanh Hoa is planning to destroy Hon Tam Island as it levelled Hon Tre and Vung Me islands?
We have already begun, but the works on Hon Tam Island haven’t been finished yet so how can we call it destruction? For example, they had to level Hon Tre Island to build Vinapearl Land, otherwise how could they grow trees, build the resort and entertainment centres? Here I want to talk about investment to improve the site, which needs levelling…But construction measures must be suitable to avoid destroying the ecological environment.
Construction activities on Hon Tam and Hon Tre islands, which are in protection zone 1, have violated the laws. What do you think about this?
The removal of Nha Trang Bay Vietnam from the list of national landscapes must be approved by the Ministry of Culture and Information with an official decision. So frankly, construction activities in protection zone 1 since the Law on Cultural Heritage took effect are illegal but Khanh Hoa has a plan for the bay as I have said.

Dragon-shaped boat races in Mekong Delta town of Chau Doc
Dragon-shaped boat races, the Victoria Chau Doc Hotel will run its third annual dragon-shaped boat races on the morning of June 6 in collaboration with the Chau Doc Sports Center to promote the Mekong Delta town of Chau Doc Vietnam as a destination for tourists and pilgrims.
Trinh Quang Man, general manager of the hotel of the Victoria Hotels and Resorts group, told the Daily that the upcoming boat races will be bigger and more festive than last year as more teams will compete on the Chau Doc River.
The boat races will take place from 10am until noon on a section of the river from the Park of Basa Fish Statue to just past the Victoria Chau Doc Hotel in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang Vietnam.
The organizers will present VND2mil to the winning team of the 1,000 meter race, VND1.5mil to the runners-up and VND1mil to the third place team.
As for the 500 meter category, the organizers have announced a first prize of VND1.5mil, a second prize of VND1mil, and a third prize of VND700,000.
Like the first and second successful dragon boat races, this year's event will coincide with the Festival of Ba Chua Xu (Lady of the Country), which kicks off annually from the 23rd night to the 27th day of the 4th lunar month, or from June 8 to 12.
Also called the Via Ba ceremony, the festival takes place every year at Ba Chua Xu Temple, which was built in the early 19th century on the well-known Sam Mountain, about five kilometers south-west of Chau Doc Town Vietnam.
Locals say in the early 1800s villagers discovered a statue of a lady dating to the 6th century in the forest and more reminiscent of statues found in India, Cambodia or Laos rather than Vietnam. Hoping that she would bring them better lives, they built a temple in her honor. This is why the marble statue of Ba Chua Xu is worshipped.
The washing and dressing of the statue on the night of the 23rd is the focal point of the festival. The bathing water is perfumed and the statue's old clothes are torn into small pieces that are distributed to pilgrims. They are considered lucky charms that keep the possessor in good health and drive away evil spirits.
At midnight on the 25th, the Tuc Yen ritual takes place. It is an imposing procession including dragon dances and banners. The imperial chair is taken to Thoai Ngoc Hau Tomb for a chanting ritual before being returned to Ba Chua Xu Temple.
The festival attracts many pilgrims and tourists to the Mekong Delta Vietnam and other parts of Vietnam. The pilgrims bring various kinds of offerings, hoping that the deity will grant luck and wealth to them.

Buoi Market in Yen Thai village Hanoi
Buoi Market, located in Yen Thai Village, Buoi Ward, Tay Ho District Hanoi Vietnam, an area once famous for traditional crafts such as papermaking, silk weaving, malt cooking, mulberry growing, etc, the Buoi Market is one of a few markets in Hanoi retaining its tradition of special market days on the auspicious 4th and 9th days of each lunar month.
It was once the place where people from different craft villages gathered and exchanged their goods.
As described in ancient documents, the Buoi Market consisted of 15 stalls selling different kinds of paper made by villagers in the Ke Buoi area, including tissue paper from Yen Thai Village, inferior tissue paper from Ho Khau Village, litmus paper from Dong Xa Village and xe paper from Yen Hoa Village Hanoi.
Also, many kinds of farming tools, such as ploughs, hoes, spades, etc., were also sold at the market to serve farmers in neighbouring areas. Other products, such as An Phu malt, Xuan Dinh confectionary, Vong green rice flakes, were available in the market.
Store owners from Hanoi often go to the market to buy products to resell in their shops. Candy made in Lu Village is a popular item. Children of all ages enjoy the tasty keo bot (flour candy), keo vung (sesame candy), keo lac (peanut candy), popcorn and rice crisps sold by an elderly lady with black teeth and wearing a triangular kerchief on her head.
Other goods can be found at the market, such as shrimp and fish from the Red River and West Lake in Hanoi Vietnam, vegetables from many villages nearby the To Lich and Nhue Rivers and specialities from other parts of the country.
Probably the most sought after items on sale at the market are various kinds of fruit trees, flowers and ornamental.
Plants from famous villages around the West Lake , like Yen Phu, Nghi Tam, Quang Ba, Nhat Tan, Tay Tuu and Phu Thuong.
On auspicious days, the number of seedlings is tenfold that of regular days. Therefore, one can find any seedling of beautiful flowers, such as rose, lily, climbing rose, jasmine, hibiscus, etc, fruit trees such as Xuan Dinh sapodilla, Canh orange, Dien grapefruit or even shade trees.
With its typical features, Buoi Maket is, indeed, an interesting place attracting a lot of Hanoians.

Tours to Ha Giang Vietnam to be developed
Tours to Ha Giang, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism has recently taken a trip to investigate Ha Giang’s potential as a destination for adventure, ecology and culture tours.
Ha Giang tours, this was a challenging 7-day and 6-night investigation trip through well-known remote and dangerous areas of the northern mountainous province like Xin Man, Hoang Su Phi, Quan Bạ, Meo Vac, and Dong Van Ha Giang.
Nguyen Thi Minh Thu, Head of Hanoi-based Travel Company, a member of the group, said that the first step in the development of a tour was investigation, which includes such important activities as learning about local culture, infrastructure and health services.
According to Ms. Thu, whose customers come chiefly from Europe and the US, the most important thing in tours is safety and sanitary conditions. Ha Giang Vietnam still retains much of its primitiveness and originality in terms of nature and culture and has hardly been touched by commercialism.
Since this trip, Mekong Travel has begun to develop tours of 6 days and 5 nights and 5 days and 4 nights, in which picturesque destinations like the rock plateau Dong Van Dong Van, Tien Thang and Xin Man villages will be the main stops.
Another member of the investigation trip was Sen Rung Trade and Tourism Company, which has more than 10 years of offering discovery tours to foreign tourists. President of the company Tran Thi Huyen Thanh said tours to such places like Ha Giang helped foreigners discover natural beauty and cultures of Vietnamese ethnicities.
Sen Rung has been eyeing Ha Giang Vietnam for the past two years and considers the July trip a valuable opportunity. Ms. Huyen Thanh suggested that local authorities and travel agencies work together to develop trekking tours for foreigners.
According to Ms. Huyen Thanh, Sen Rung will offer at least two kinds of tours for Ha Giang Vietnam: a 4-5 day tour connecting Tuyen Quang and southern Ha Giang Vietnam and a 5-7 day one for the rock plateaus, Quang Ba, Yen Minh, Meo Vac, and Dong Van.
Vu Thi Thanh Ha from Exotissimo Vietnam Travel said Ha Giang had a lot of potential for tourism development thanks to its breathtaking beauty and interesting cultures of more than 22 ethnic minorities. But there are still many things to do to turn it into a tourist destination.
Kevin Tu Quy Thanh from Travelink Company agrees. He said Ha Giang still needed to improve traffic safety, sanitary conditions and health services. He suggested that local authorities put direction signs to famous areas and build fences on dangerous roads to ensure traffic safety as well as build more roads, public restrooms and stops to make it more convenient for tourists.

Xin Man District, one of ten districts in Ha Giang Vietnam, is a small, tranquil place near the Chinese border. It has much to offer tourists, particularly its Sunday market where a wide range of local fruit specialties, such as plum, peach, wild banana and corn, are available at very cheap prices.
Hidden in the mountains about 140 kilometers from Ha Giang Town, the capital of Ha Giang Province Vietnam, or 75km from Bac Ha District in Lao Cai Province Vietnam, Xin Man market is considered the most beautiful market in the northernmost area of Vietnam. Far from the town and a little bit difficult to reach because of the bumpy and muddy road, the district is not well-known to mass tourism, but it is worth the effort to get there.
The route from Ha Giang to Xin Man is through beautiful scenery of rice paddies on the mountain sides, affording a rare opportunity to enjoy the picturesque landscape of the mountains and discover the diverse, traditional customs of ethnic minority people who live here.
The name of each ethnic minority group is derived from the appearance of their traditional costumes and this area is mainly populated by Mong Hoa people, including Mong Hoa (Flower H’mong), Mong Den (Black H’mong), Nung, Tay and Dao.
On arriving at Xin Man District, the market is easy to find, as it is located on the edge of the district itself. When in Xin Man, tourists should get up early on a Sunday morning and start the day with an invigorating walk along a small path through numerous beautiful villages and terraced rice fields.
The Sunday market in Xin Man is filled with hill-tribe traders from surrounding villages. The market consists of several narrow alleys lined with wooden stalls offering basic sundries, but its flavor is other-worldly, with all the participants adorned in magnificent costumes.
Picking their way through the crowd, tourists will be met with warm smiles and hospitality from the many different ethnic minority groups who have come there to trade.
Visiting the Sunday market in the early morning is a long-held tradition of the Mong Den and Mong Hoa people. They go to the market as people in Hanoi go shopping at the weekend and eat pho, which is mainly the same as the beef or chicken noodle soup in Hanoi, but served with tofu and vegetables.
Purchasing fresh plums or peaches is easy, just simply choose the fruits and ask the price. It is not necessary to bargain as local sellers always charge the true prices. This is the way they treat tourists at Xin Man market.

Tay ethnic group cash in on rising tourism
Tay ethnic group, surrounded by a stunning natural landscape, the Tay ethnic group lives in stilt houses and lead a colourful life filled with beautiful songs and dancing, their clothes display traditional brocade weaving and they eat many traditional dishes which are rich in flavour.
Yet, when it comes to income, the Tay ethnic group are poor. One question villager Dao A Son always considered was: “How do we reduce poverty?”
He found an answer. And that was to invite tourists to sample the richness of Tay village life.
He has found new ways to welcome tourists to his mountain village. And when they arrive at his home, they are treated like family members.
Dao A Son aims to make the tourists feel as comfortable as possible. And he has become successful in his quest to welcome foreign visitors. His mountain village has become a famous tourist area, located 30km from Sa Pa town.
For the price of VND 60,000 ( US $3.6) visitors are provided with a dinner of many dishes, including bamboo-tube rice, fish, black chicken (a favourite dish in the area), cabbage and many other specialities.
Tay ethnic group, the village children also contribute to the experience of the tourists. By speaking with them, they are able to improve their English language skills.
In the mountain village, there are 15 households that welcome tourists. A stilt house can host 10 to 15 people and earn 5-6 million VND (US $295-350) per month, confirmed Deputy Chairman of People’s Committee of Ban Do commune Dao A Vinh.
Tourists sleep on the floor or on mattresses which provide a comfortable bed after they spend time trekking in Hoang Lien national park or climbing the nearby mountains. Visitors also like swimming in the Ca Nhat waterfall and using the hot springs near the village.
Developing the local tourism industry provides a much more gentle lifestyle for the villagers compared with the arduous work in the rice fields. Of course, the villagers are also able to earn three to four times more than before, Dao A Vinh added.
He reflected on poorer years of the village’s past which has only 30 ha on fields for 128 households with over 534 people mostly from the ethnic Tay group.
The life of the Tay people has changed for the better and they use every resource they have to make tourism work for them. Traditional handicrafts are maintained and women weave brocade to sell to travellers.
“The number of poor families has stabilised at about 35 percent. This is a good result for the village and I hope that the number of poor families decrease in the near future,” A Vinh said enthusiastically.
With traditional culture including folk songs, xoe dance, tinh guitar, bamboo dance, traditional special dishes and the beauty of the natural landscape, the Tay ethnic families have welcomed tourism into the heart of their village.

Ban Gioc Waterfalls a picturesque realisation of a childhood dream
Ban Gioc Waterfalls, when I was in first grade and I turned a dog-eared page in my textbook to reveal a brilliant image of Ban Gioc Waterfalls - and I knew I had to go.
But as the hectic schedule of life would have it, I only got the chance to realise my dream last weekend with a small family troupe packed into the car, my brother-in-law at the wheel.
To get to the falls we had to traverse Ma Phuc Pass. It sounds intimidating but we eased along the stretch of road 20km away from Cao Bang Town quite happily, soaking in the majestic mountain views.
Two hours later we drew up in Trung Khanh District Town, famous for its delicious chestnut speciality. We took a moment to explore the old streets of the little town before turning out onto a quiet and smooth section 26km road leading up the Ban Gioc Waterfalls on the Vietnamese-Chinese border.
It felt like life had suddenly been slowed down - the only sound the distant murmuring of the Quy Son River on the slopes below us, and on the opposite shore delicate stilt houses perched on the mountainside.
We left the car near a border guard station so we could get a good view of the 53m falls before our approach.
It was an astounding sight - the Quy Thuan River cascading 34km over cliffs and crags, knife-edged stones and emerald foliage breaking the dazzling water into three main branches and countless white plumes, spreading a veil of shimmering mist. Looking out along the Hoa (Flowery) Waterfall, we could see long swathes of moss bleeding jade into the cliff-face.
When we arrived the falls were already crowded with visitors, the water below teeming with rafts full of Chinese tourists.
Catching the eye of a local raft owner hanging around on the shore, we asked him for a lift to the falls. But to our disappointment, he refused, saying villagers of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups were celebrating their new rice festival and couldn't work.
But our bad luck lasted only a matter of seconds as local photographer Nong Van Nam approached us wielding his camera.
Instead of a photo, I asked him for the way to the falls and he pointed out a small path winding into the distance.
And so I jumped over the powerful river from rock to rock with a pang of regret that I'd only made it this breath-taking place so late in life.
Still beside us, the photographer offered to show us a way to the very top of the falls. On his rickety little raft we slipped through a chasm in the rock and onto the first tier of the waterfall.
Mingled with the fresh sound of thrashing water were the voices of what I thought must be hundred of tourists. A hint of the real world began to sink in.
"Today the roads are much better, and they even have hotels and restaurants over there," Nam said.
Following his finger, I saw a road snaking along the mountainside, fast cars streaking along it. Must be in good condition, I thought to myself.
At weekends or during summer holidays the falls can attract hundreds of visitors, Nam told me, adding he could earn as much as VND500,000-600,000 a day by taking their photos.
But Ban Gioc Waterfalls aren't the only attraction in the area. Only three kilometres away there's Nguom Ngao Cave, locally known as Tiger Cave, a sight, framed with its spectacular stalagmites and stalactites.
The cave is about 2,144m long and about 60m at its highest, including the three main gates Nguom Lom, Nguom Ngao and Ban Thuon, according to measurements recorded by the British Royal Cave Association in 1995.
Our tour guide Nong Thi Tien, told us there is a three-km road inside the cave to Ban Gioc Waterfalls. She asked us if we would willing to go there for an interesting venture, but what a pity, our times were very limited.
Tapping into the cave's popularity, local authorities have upgraded the surrounding roads and set up lighting in the cave to guide visitors through whilst showing off the cave's best features.
Together, Ban Gioc Waterfalls and the Nguom Ngao Cave attract thousands of local and foreign tourists visit every year, according to Luc Van Khoan, head of the Cao Bang Tourism Department's Management Office of Tourism.
I for one think everyone should see these places - even just for the percean quiet you can take home with you. But this time I know I won't be waiting a lifetime before I make my second visit.

Vietnam's Da Lat - City of Eternal Spring
Da Lat, called the City of Eternal Spring or the City of Love, is probably one of Vietnam’s most well-known vacation destinations. The City of Eternal Spring has long been popular with Vietnamese and foreigners because of its flowers, weather, landscapes and tourist sites.
Set next to Xuan Huong Lake, the Da Lat Flower Gardens were established in 1966 by the Vietnamese government, and are tended continually. Among the tastefully arranged flora are orchids, hydrangeas, fuchsias, roses, white narcissus, and ferns.
The orchid, named “queen of the world of flowers”, is a common sight wherever you go in Da Lat. Among the world’s 100,000 species of orchids, Vietnam already has 500, many of which grow in Da Lat Vietnam. Annually, Da Lat explodes in a riot of color when its Flower Festival begins in October or sometimes December.
Da Lat Vietnam is known for its market gardens which grow everything from carrots and cauliflowers to avocados and bananas as well as many varieties of flowers. The market covers two blocks with more than 1,300 shops. On the ground floor of Block A merchants sell flowers, household appliances and other Da Lat specialties.
Da Lat Vietnam is also famous for its mild climate. Climatologists call Da Lat the “City of Eternal Spring” because its highest temperature is 24 degrees and its lowest temperature is 15 degree. The annual average rainfall is 1,755 millimeter. The dry season starts from December to March and the rainy season is from April to November. The city enjoys the sun in all the seasons. Thanks to the weather, the City of Eternal Spring has colorful gardens all year round.
Tourists get a deep impression of Da Lat’s tourists sites such as Bao Dai Summer Palaces, Crazy House, Langbian Mountain, Lat Village, Linh Son Pagoda, and Truc Lam Pagoda.
Da Lat’s three palaces are referred to simply as Palace 1, Palace 2, and Palace 3. The palaces were all completed by the French, but only Palace 3 was a royal home. It was owned by the last emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, Bao Dai. You can find it on Le Hong Phong Road, about a quarter of a mile southwest of Da Lat’s central district. The palace is open to the public.
The Crazy House rises about five storeys above its suburban neighbors into the skyline, great sweeps of black and yellow concrete, bizarrely shaped glass openings, beautifully peach-coloured walkways that are a cross between a tunnel and cave, and sculptured rooftops that appear menacing.
Da Lat travel has many beautiful waterfalls, pine forests, and lakes such as Xuan Huong, Than Tho, Da Thien, Van Kiep, and Me Linh.
Xuan Huong Lake extends directly into the downtown area and is dotted with villas and cafes. Dan Thien Lake and Chien Thang Lake are a couple of miles from the center. Legends about lovers who came to sad ends surround the lakes.
Travel to Dalat, Than Tho Lake is located five kilometers northeast of the city centre. Like many of Da Lat’s sights, a tragic love story took place at the lake. A young woman, who wrongly believed her lover has died, drowned herself in Than Tho Lake. Since then the surrounding pine trees have sighed in grief.
Prenn Waterfall, which is a major attraction for Vietnamese and foreign tourists, tumbles over a wide overhang and into a large pool below. A path circles around the pool so that visitors can walk behind the waterfall and look out through the curtain of water.
Recently, a delegation from the Organizing Board for Miss Universe has conducted a survey in Da Lat amongst other provinces and cities to look for a venue to host the competition in 2008.
Travel to Dalat Vietnam, with the above typical features of the City of Eternal Spring, Da Lat Vietnam full expects to be selected as one of the venues to host Miss Universe 2008.

Nguyen Du Temple is an attractive place for tourism Vietnam
There is no majestic landscape equal to Ha Long Bay, nor great vestiges such as the ancient capital city of Hue.
However, in the northern province of Ha Tinh, there are a wide variety of well known cultural and historical sites and landscapes of to attract tourists. All this makes Ha Tinh one of the most popular tourism destinations in the country.
Visitors can take a bus ride of 20 kilometers from Vinh City, in the northern province of Nghe An, to Nguyen Du Temple located in Tien Dien Village, where the country’s great writer Nguyen Du was born in the late nineteenth century.
Tien Dien has always been a prosperous village owing to its high-ranking mandarins, dukes and civil officers. The holy soul of Lam River and Hong Mountain appear to converge here for the success of the most notable poet, Nguyen Du, and his immortal composition of Truyen Kieu (the Tale of Kieu).
In the village, tourists can visit the relic complex and the commemorated area of the poet, which covers over two hectares. Located here are two ancient houses where the famous poet and his family lived in the nineteenth century.
Sheltered by nearly 300 year old trees, the houses showcase many documents and personal memorabilia of the late poet, such as his pen, ink bottle, hand made fan and old books.
The two houses also display various notes on his literary works and poems; his family and friends still keep the stele and the musical stone by the front door.
Tourists may also visit a library, set up as a tribute to the great poet, containing 1,500 book titles including 500 copies of the Tale of Kieu, which were published during various periods from about 200 years ago.
The library also shows a calligraphy book which features the Kieu story. This book, compiled by the well known artist Nguyet Dinh, is considered to be the largest collection of calligraphy works on Nguyen Du’s epic poem. It weighs 77 kilograms and is 1.6 meters in length.
About one km away in Cung field is Nguyen Du’s simple and modest grave. Every year, people, particularly students, from the country’s regions come here to burn incense to memorialize the poet and pray for their good studying career in the future.
Leaving Tien Dien Village, visitors may travel to Co Dam village where they will have a chance to listen to Ca Tru (ceremonial singing) by elderly artists living here.
The village is thought to be the site of original Ca Tru and has been submitted to UNESCO for possible recognition as a cultural world heritage site.
In the village, a Ca Tru club has been established and convenes on every full moon day at the communal office. Family classes rehearse almost every evening at the homes of the elderly masters.
In Co Dam Village, an ancient temple dedicated to Dinh Le, the founder of ceremonial singing, once existed but was destroyed in severe bombing in 1968.
However, visitors can learn more about the traditional art via old artists’ renditions.

Sea wolf on beautiful landscape of Nha Trang bay
Jean Pierre, French nationality, whom laid the foundations for diving sports in Vietnam, whose nick name is ‘sea wolf’, talked about why he loves Nha Trang Vietnam and diving.
The man with more than 30 years of diving under the sea all over the world, recalled that he first dived 35 years ago. The beautiful landscape he observed at the bottom of the ocean has been forever embedded in his memory, which then explains why to decided to pursue a career in which he could be in and out of the water.
Jeans Guendel, a German diving guide, described Jean as a ‘sea wolf’. “He can talk about the sea all day, he knows every special characteristic of all the world’s seas,” he said, adding that he has learnt much from sea wolf when working with him.
Jean Pierre said that he finds Vietnamese seas wonderful. Phu Quoc, Con Dao and Hoi An all have favourable conditions to develop dive-discovery tourism. He said that the Hon Mun (Nha Trang bay) sea reserve area with the ecological system of more than 300 types of corals and nearly all tropical sea creatures proves to be the most attractive place and most suitable for diving.
When asked why he came to Vietnam and stayed here to develop the dive-discovery tourism in Nha Trang, Jean said it was predestined. More than 12 years ago, when he traveled around Vietnam, he discovered that Hon Mun was a wonderful place for diving, the Hon Mun. He returned to Vietnam with his wife and diving equipment, which were described by Nha Trang residents as “looking like the equipment on the Discovery programme on TV”.
Jean said: “12 years ago, I discovered that Nha Trang’s sea was very beautiful, it had a diversified ecological system suitable for opening a diving club. At that time, there were no other diving services offered.” Jean has an Instructor’s certificate (granted by the international diving association) and decided to open a diving club in 1994 in Nha Trang.
Established as a small club, which only two other staff, Jean had to train his guides and serve clients himself when necessary. His business was so good that one year later, he decided to sell his club in Thailand to focus solely on Nha Trang.
When asked why he decided to sell the club in Thailand, Jean said that the life in Nha Trang is more suitable to him. The local residents are kind and good-natured, they never harm other people, and more importantly, Nha Trang sea is so beautiful.
Now the sea wolf considers Vietnam his second homeland, where he can live with his indulgence, good friends and students. Nguyen Thi Minh Xuan, Director of Coco Dive Centre, one of his first students, said that there is a natural association of Jean and Nha Trang. Every year, Jean spends nine months in Vietnam, and three months in France to visit relatives and friends.
Now Nha Trang has 10 dive clubs and it attracts more and more travelers, whom adore Nha Trang Vietnam and diving sports. Having the degree of PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and acting as the consultant for Coco Dive Centre, Jean spends a lot of his time training diving guides. This job requires good health and diving experience.
Diving services have been developing strongly in the last two years in Vietnam. Many training courses have been provided to Vietnamese guides. Many foreigners whom also want to visit Nha Trang enroll in the training courses as it is not as expensive in comparison to courses in other parts of the world.
What challenges Jean most is that the dive service fee remains high at $30-35 per person, relative to the wages of Vietnamese people, at $30-35/person.

Cu Lao Cham Vietnam recognised as national landscape
Cu Lao Cham has been listed among the national sea reserve with the diversified fauna and rare woods, which need to be put under strict protection. There are 135 species of coral, 500 seaweeds, more than 200 fishes, four varieties of tiger prawn and 84 molluse. The location has also been well known for birds’ nests, which is considered a valuable and tasteful kind of meal. When coming here, travellers will have chances to view the sea swallows' nests clinging to the towering cliff.
Cu Lao Cham has drawn more attention from tourists in the last few years. In 1999, it received only 593 tourists, while the figure rose to 10,000 in 2006, 60% of which were foreign travellers, which represented a 20% increase every year.
However, experts have pointed out that Cu Lao Cham needs to be further invested to become more attractive in the eyes of tourists. Up to now, there has been only one investment project in here, by the Cu Lao Cham Investment Joint Stock Company. There are some 20 boarding houses in the island commune, but all of them do not have enough modern facilities.
Tran Van An, Deputy Director of the Hoi An Heritage Preservation Centre said that the centre is planning to provide a new tour: travelling with sailing boat. He said that he has the documents showing that the sailing boats once went in and out in great number. He said that the model of the sailing boats of the last centuries will be restored, and experienced fishermen will drive some 20 sailing boats running on the river..
Truong Van Bay, Deputy Chairman of the Hoi An Town Peoples’ Committee said that the appearance of the sailing boats will have good impression on cultural researchers, tourists and those who love Hoi An Vietnam.

Cambodia to consider visa exemption for Vietnamese investors
The Cambodian government will consider exempting visa for Vietnamese entrepreneurs to enter the kingdom, the Cambodge Soir reported on Friday
The Vietnamese side submitted such a request in order to facilitate bilateral trade and economic cooperation, when the Cambodian-Vietnamese Business Forum was held here on Wednesday.
Thong Khon, secretary of state for Ministry of Tourism, was quoted as saying that the government will take the request into account as it wishes to attract more business-oriented foreigners to Cambodia.
"The government has laid out a policy aimed at attracting investors to come to Cambodia. We will hold detailed discussions on the issue with the ministries of foreign affairs and commerce," he said.

Da Lat weather changes unusually
The highest temperature in this Central Highlands city soars to 27oC and falls to 6.5oC at the lowest level. In the history of Da Lat Vietnam, the weather has never changed suddenly like this.
Mai Quoc Viet, Deputy Director of the Hydrometeorology Forecast Centre of Lam Dong Province, said that the temperature in Da Lat is gradually increasing with the suddenly increase of the gap between the highest and lowest levels, from 8-10oC on average in previous years to 12-15oC now.
In the past several weeks, the highest temperature jumped to 27oC and the lowest was 6.5oC. Even in the most fierce period of El Nino in 1997, Da Lat’s weather was not in such a situation. According to Mr Viet, measurements show that the maximum rainfall in Da Lat and Lam Dong in general this year would be 100-120mm compared to 150-200mm in the previous years.
The fast narrowing of the inner forest area in Da Lat City, the high speed of construction and El Nino are the reasons causing the above situation, reported the Lam Dong Hydrometeorology Forecast Centre. At the same time, local agronomists warn that negative weather changes may facilitate the development of insects and disease on crops and animals in this largest area for vegetable and flower planting of Vietnam. Da Lat City in Lam Dong Province is a popular tourist destination, which is highly appreciated for its temperate climate, beautiful sights such as waterfalls, lakes and its abundance of flowers and vegetables.

Vinpearl cable car system encroaches on Nha Trang Port
No government agencies have announced data about the height of the Vinpearl cable car system across Nha Trang Port. Yet, according to the data released by the investor, Vinpearl Tourism and Trade Stock Company, the cable car system’s maximum height that allows ships to go through is 54m. Thus, the Aurora with 53m in height plus the tide amplitude of 1.5-2m and the wave amplitude at the time of passing won’t be able to pass under the cable.
Nha Trang Port’s representative, Dang Minh Trung, also said that with 270m in length, the Aurora could only be anchored at Wharf No. 3 (suppose it could go through the cable). Yet, the vertical distance between this wharf to the Vinpearl cable car system is only 65m. If the ship entered Nha Trang Port, a part of it would lie right under the cable car system, which would be dangerous if winds and waves moved the ship and caused collision with the cable system.
According to many experts as well as Nha Trang Port’s officials, the Aurora is only a cruise ship of the moderate size. Nha Trang Port has welcomed many ships of the same size or bigger than the Aurora.
The total area of the Vinpearl project is 6,532sq.m, 4,032sq.m of which is on land and 2,500sq.m is at sea. The whole cable car system is 3,310m in length, connecting Phu Quy Urban Zone in Vinh Nguyen, Nha Trang to the “casino hill” of Vinpearlland tourist site on Hon Tre Island. The system includes 7 sea poles, 2 land poles and 2 stations. The height of the section between Pole 2 and Pole 3 is 45m in normal conditions. The heights between other pairs of poles are lower.
Many experts think that even smaller ships than the Aurora won’t move in Nha Trang Port as easily as before. This is likely to create great difficulties to ships which want to arrive in the port to escape storms.
